What is Twitch latency and how the modes compare

Real talk: latency on Twitch is the delay between an action on the streamer's PC and the moment a viewer sees it on the player. From the API side, the platform exposes this as a metric called Latency to Broadcaster, which is visible inside the player's Advanced video stats. Twitch describes the metric as a measurement of how long it takes in seconds for content to get from a streamer's computer to a viewer on the streamer's page.
Two latency profiles are available to every Affiliate and Partner. Speaking from the OAuth flow we ship, low Latency targets 2-4 seconds end-to-end and has been the default for new channels since 2018. In our integration tests, normal Latency holds 10-15 seconds and gives the player a larger buffer to absorb network jitter. The mode you pick only changes video. Normal vs Low Latency: which mode fits your stream
In our integration tests, most streamers should leave the dashboard on Low Latency, which is the default. The buffer trade-off is the part most guides skip. A YouTube help document on live latency says it plainly: at lower latency, your viewers may experience more playback buffering. Twitch behaves the same way. A smaller player buffer absorbs less jitter, so a viewer on a weak mobile connection may see short stalls in Low Latency that they wouldn't see in Normal.
The answer is rarely raising the bitrate — if your audience reports buffering and your Stream Health is green. Or accepting that some viewers will manually disable Low Latency on their side — the fix is either pointing them at the player gear icon to lower quality. That's a Twitch player option, not a channel-wide setting, so you can't force it.
How to enable Low Latency in the Creator Dashboard
The toggle lives in the same place on web and mobile. Streamlabs' help article describes the flow well: open the Creator Dashboard, navigate to Settings, then Stream, locate Latency Mode toward the bottom of the screen, and select Low Latency to minimise stream delay. Five steps and you are done.
- Click your profile picture in the top right of twitch.tv and pick Creator Dashboard.
- Open Settings in the left sidebar, then click the Stream tab.
- Scroll until you see the Latency Mode block under Stream Key & Preferences.
- Choose the Low Latency radio button (most accounts already have it selected).
- Save changes; the new mode applies on your next stream start, not the current one.

- Rate control: CBR. Variable bitrate creates traffic bursts that ISPs route poorly during peak hours. Twitch's broadcasting guidelines suggest CBR for predictable, stable results.
- Encoder preset: x264 veryfast or NVENC P5 (Quality). Slower presets add encoder think-time, which adds latency the dashboard cannot remove.
OBS Advanced > Network checkboxes
- Enable new networking code: on. Required for the low-latency packet path.
- Enable low latency mode: on. Fragments larger packets and prioritises frame transmission speed.
- Bind to IP: leave at Default unless your ISP has flaky IPv6 routing to Twitch ingest.
- Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion: on. Will quietly drop bitrate before dropping frames.

Checking real Latency to Broadcaster
Trusting the dashboard label without checking the real number is the most common mistake. The actual latency depends on the encoder, the ingest distance, the viewer's network, and the player's chosen ABR rung. Two checks tell you what is happening: one from the streamer's side, one from a viewer's account.
Streamer side, inside Stream Manager
- Open Stream Manager while you are live in a test mode (or with a private session).
- Click the three-dot menu in the video preview tile.
- Pick Show Stats. The overlay reports current bitrate, FPS, and latency.
- Compare against the table below; if the number sits above the band for your mode, the encoder or ingest server is the cause.
Viewer side, in the player
- Open the channel in a different account or an incognito window.
- Click the gear icon in the bottom right of the video player.
- Open Advanced and toggle Video Stats on.
- Look at Latency to Broadcaster. The number updates roughly once per second.

Reducing delay further on the streamer and viewer side
Once the dashboard mode is correct and the OBS toggles match, you've squeezed about 80% of the available latency out of the path. Look — the remaining 20% is network hygiene, ingest selection, and viewer-side player choices. None of these are a single switch. Together they shave another 1-3 seconds in normal conditions.
Streamer-side fixes that actually move the number
- Plug Ethernet directly into the router. Wi-Fi adds 5-80 ms of jitter that the small Low Latency buffer cannot absorb.

- Close cloud sync, Steam updates, and any other long-running upload. CBR gives you no headroom against contention.
- Lower the encoder preset by one notch (medium to fast on x264, P5 to P4 on NVENC) only if your CPU has spare cycles; faster presets reduce encoder think-time.
- Update GPU drivers monthly during 2026; NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel are all shipping NVENC and AV1 latency fixes this year.
Viewer-side fixes you can hint at on stream
- Click the player gear icon, set quality to a fixed value below Source rather than Auto. Auto rebuffers more in Low Latency.
- Disable browser extensions that touch the Twitch player; some ad blockers add 1-2 seconds.
- Use the desktop site, not the mobile web view, when the chat back-and-forth matters.
- Switch off VPNs or browser proxies on the viewer side; rerouting through a distant exit node can add 3-5 seconds.
- On Chrome, change DNS to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 if the ISP DNS resolves Twitch CDN edges slowly.
Worth flagging: worth flagging: if you stream a competitive game and care about anti-snipe protection, Low Latency is exactly the wrong choice. Switch to Normal and add a 15-30 second manual delay through Stream Manager, or longer if the stake is high. Twitch isn't the only platform with a low-latency mode. YouTube's ultra-low latency mode and Twitch's Low Latency overlap in the same window of about 2-5 seconds end-to-end, which is why most streamers can't tell them apart in casual chat. Sub-second latency through WebRTC is real but specialised. No, the picture quality is identical. Low Latency only changes the size of the player buffer and the chunk delivery cadence on the CDN. Image quality is set by your bitrate, resolution, and encoder. Should I disable Low Latency for competitive games?

So any network jitter on the viewer side stalls the stream sooner — low Latency reduces the player buffer. Does Low Latency mode affect chat speed?
It does not change chat itself; chat travels over Twitch's IRC bridge in milliseconds either way. What changes is the perceived sync. With Low Latency, your spoken response to a message lands within seconds of the viewer typing it. With Normal Latency, the viewer types, watches you talk about something else for ten seconds, then sees your reply, which kills the sense of conversation.
Can viewers force Low Latency on or off themselves?
Viewers can toggle Low Latency in their own player from the gear menu when the streamer has it on. They cannot force a stream into Low Latency if the streamer has Normal selected. The streamer dashboard setting is the ceiling; the viewer can only step down from there.
Does Twitch have a sub-second latency option in 2026?

The dashboard toggle is the start of the latency stack; the encoder, network, and viewer-side player choices control the rest.
