Twitch actively develops interactive mechanics for interaction between viewers and streamers. One such system is Channel Points, which help retain audience and make chat participation more engaging. This is internal free currency available to streamers with affiliate status or higher.
What Are Channel Points
Channel points are points that viewers earn for active participation in streams. They're awarded for watching, subscribing, raids, participating in chat activities and other actions. The more time viewer spends on stream, the more points they earn.
Unlike donations or paid subscriptions, points don't require real investments — it's internal engagement mechanic. Viewers can spend them on rewards that streamer configures individually: from simple "Choose next song" to "Do 10 push-ups". This approach allows making stream more interactive and fun.
How to Enable and Configure
To activate this function, streamer needs to:
- Go to Twitch Control Panel.
- Open Settings → Affiliate section.
- Find "Channel Points" item and enable it.
- Complete basic setup: specify currency name, upload icon.
- Add standard rewards (offered by platform) and set unique custom ones.
Creating rewards is way to highlight your channel, emphasize streamer style and give viewers incentive to return. You can make seasonal, thematic or unique offers that will be available only for limited time.
Using Points: Viewer Perspective
When viewer accumulates enough points, they can click special button under chat — and choose from list of available rewards. Twitch interface shows cost, description, and usage restrictions (for example, time limit or number of daily activations).
Points are also used in predictions mechanic (Twitch Predictions), where viewers can bet their points on specific event outcome and, if lucky, get even more.
Why You Should Enable Channel Points
This function helps make streams more interesting and deeply engage viewers. Thanks to points, loyalty increases, viewing time grows and sense of community is created. And custom rewards are excellent opportunity to show creativity and strengthen your channel image.
