# What an empty quality menu actually tells you
Twitch calls the extra qualities transcodes: versions of your broadcast at lower resolutions, generated so viewers on weak connections or older devices can watch without buffering[1]. When they exist, the player's Settings icon offers a list. When they do not, it offers Source and Audio Only, because those two are not transcodes — Source is the stream you sent and Audio Only is stripped from it.
So the empty menu is a precise signal, and it is worth reading it precisely. It does not mean your stream is broken, your bitrate is wrong, your channel is penalised, or your OBS settings need changing. It means one thing: this particular broadcast is being delivered at a single video quality.
One consequence is worth stating early, because it decides how much this matters to you. Without transcodes, a viewer whose connection cannot carry your Source bitrate has no lower rung to fall back to. They buffer, or they leave. If you stream at 6000 kbps — Twitch's recommended setting for 1080p60[4] — that is a real filter on who can watch you comfortably.
# Three different things can put qualities on a stream
Most of the confusion in this topic comes from three separate mechanisms sharing the word “transcode”. They have different owners, different eligibility and different reliability, and knowing which one you are talking about resolves most arguments about it.

Twitch draws the distinction between the first two itself: standard transcodes “require server resources and are allocated based on availability”, while Enhanced Broadcasting encodes “are created by your own broadcast software before the stream reaches Twitch” and are therefore “always available when Enhanced Broadcasting is enabled, with no server allocation needed”[1].
# How the allocation really works
This is the part with an authoritative answer that almost nothing in the search results carries. Twitch's Transcoding Options FAQ describes the rule in two clauses, and both clauses matter.
Standard transcode availability is not influenced by follower count, viewer count, or past enforcement actions. It is determined by server resource availability at the time your stream starts.— Twitch Help Centre · Transcoding Options FAQ
The first clause kills three pieces of folklore at once. Follower count does nothing. Viewer count does nothing — there is no ten-viewer threshold, no hidden concurrency number that flips a switch. And past enforcement does nothing, which means a missing quality menu is not evidence that you were flagged, warned or shadow-limited. Twitch states the negative case explicitly elsewhere on the same page: it “does not remove transcoding options as an enforcement action or otherwise”[1].
The second clause is the one that explains the symptom people actually report, which is not “I never have qualities” but “I had them last week and now I don't”. Allocation happens at the time your stream starts, and Twitch confirms it is “determined each time your stream goes live”[1]. It is not a property of your channel. It is a decision taken at each go-live against whatever spare capacity exists in that moment.
- It can differ between two streams on the same day. Nothing about your channel changed; the capacity did.
- It cannot be requested. Twitch says standard transcodes “are not available by request”[1].
- It cannot be bought. Twitch's FAQ carries an unusually blunt line: “Do not trust third-party services or websites that promise to transcode video after the broadcast is sent to Twitch”[1].
- Affiliates are not a separate tier. The FAQ groups “Affiliates and all other streamers” together as non-partners on the same availability rule[1].
# The switch that ends the lottery
If you want quality options that do not depend on Twitch's spare capacity, there is exactly one supported route, and it does not involve growing first. Enhanced Broadcasting has your own GPU produce the ladder and upload the variants in parallel, so no server-side allocation is involved at all. Twitch's answer to “why doesn't my stream have quality options” is, in substance, to use it: “To get consistent quality options, use Enhanced Broadcasting on any stream”[1].
Eligibility is the part worth repeating because so much older writing gets it wrong: “Enhanced broadcasting is available to all streamers on Twitch”[2]. Not Partners. Not Affiliates. All streamers. The gate is software and hardware, not status.
What it actually requires
- OBS Studio 30.2 or newer, or XSplit Broadcaster 4.5.2406.1801 or newer[2]. Twitch also lists Meld and Streamlabs among the broadcast software that can send multiple encodes[2].
- In OBS: Settings → Stream → select Twitch as the service → Connect Account, then tick Enable Enhanced Broadcasting in the Multitrack Video section[2].
- In XSplit: Broadcast → Setup a new output → Twitch, then under Video Encoding → Codec choose NVENC H.264 and tick Enable Enhanced Broadcasting[2].
- Leave Auto checked unless you have a reason not to. Maximum Streaming Bandwidth and Maximum Video Tracks are, in Twitch's words, “upper limits, not a target or preference”[2] — lowering them constrains what you can receive.

# You turned it on and the menu is still thin
Here is the expectation gap that produces the second wave of confused posts. Enhanced Broadcasting is widely described — including in older writing of our own — as giving you 1080p, 720p and 480p. That is a plausible outcome, not a promise. What Twitch documents is an algorithm called automatic stream configuration that decides your ladder from your GPU, drivers, OS, broadcast settings and network speed, and it explicitly warns that “you will receive a configuration that may change every time you start streaming”[2].
Twitch publishes the ranges that configuration is allowed to move within. They are wider than most people assume, and reading them turns “my stream is broken” into “my stream is at the low end of a documented range”.

Read the first two rows together. Two renditions is a legal outcome, and so is a top track of 480p. A streamer on a modest GPU and a thin uplink can switch Enhanced Broadcasting on, see a two-entry menu topping out below 1080p, and conclude the feature failed. It did not fail — it delivered the configuration the algorithm judged their setup could carry. The fix is on the input side: a stronger encoder, more upload headroom, current drivers.
Quality options are a delivery problem. Turnout is a different one.

# If you are the viewer, not the streamer
A good share of the people asking this question are not broadcasting at all. They are watching, the quality list is shorter than they expect, and they are trying to work out whether it is them or the channel. There is a clean test.
- Open a different channel — ideally a large one. If its quality menu is full, your browser, device and connection are fine.
- Go back to the original channel. If it still shows only Source and Audio Only, that channel has no transcodes on this broadcast, and there is nothing you can change from your side.
- If every channel looks limited, the cause is local: browser, device, or the settings below.
For the 2K (1440p) entry specifically, Twitch documents why it may be absent even on a channel that is genuinely streaming in 2K, and shows the reason in the quality menu itself. Two of these surprise people[3].
- You are logged out. Higher-resolution viewing is restricted to logged-in viewers; logged-out viewers still get 1080p and below[3].
- Regional restriction. Higher-resolution viewing is limited in some regions, with 1080p and lower available everywhere[3].
- Device or browser not supported. Some TV devices, older phones and consoles cannot do 1440p yet[3].
- Hardware acceleration off. Twitch lists enabling graphics acceleration, updating the browser, and on Windows 10 installing HEVC Video Extensions[3]. Our supported browsers guide covers the browser side.
- The streamer did not enable Enhanced Broadcasting. In that case, Twitch notes, they must end the stream to fix it[3].
# The bottom line
An empty quality menu is a capacity outcome, not a verdict on your channel. Twitch allocates standard transcodes from finite server resources, gives Partners guaranteed access, hands everyone else whatever is spare at the moment they go live, and re-runs that decision at every single go-live. Follower count, viewer count and your enforcement history are all documented as irrelevant to it.
That makes the practical question simple. If you can live with a menu that comes and goes, change nothing. If you cannot — and if a meaningful share of your audience is on mobile data or older hardware, you probably cannot — then Enhanced Broadcasting is the only supported way to stop rolling the dice, it is open to every streamer regardless of status, and the cost is GPU headroom rather than growth. Go in expecting a menu whose shape your hardware decides, not a fixed 1080p/720p/480p ladder, and it will behave exactly as documented.
One last thing worth separating, because it is easy to conflate. Transcodes govern whether the people who show up can watch you comfortably. They have nothing to do with how many show up. Those are two different problems and only one of them is in your encoder settings.
# Frequently asked questions
Why does my Twitch stream only have one quality option?
Because that broadcast did not receive standard transcodes. Twitch generates the lower qualities on its own servers, and those servers have limited capacity: Partners receive transcodes on every broadcast, while Affiliates and all other streamers receive them “based on resource availability each time they go live”. Source and Audio Only are the two entries that exist without any transcoding, which is why they are what remains when allocation does not happen.
Do I need more viewers to get transcoding on Twitch?
No. This is the most repeated answer online and Twitch contradicts it directly: “Standard transcode availability is not influenced by follower count, viewer count, or past enforcement actions. It is determined by server resource availability at the time your stream starts.” There is no viewer threshold that unlocks transcodes.
Can I ask Twitch to enable transcoding on my channel?
No. Twitch states that standard transcodes “are not available by request”, and warns against “third-party services or websites that promise to transcode video after the broadcast is sent to Twitch”. The supported route to consistent quality options is Enhanced Broadcasting, which is open to every streamer and does not involve asking anyone.
Do Twitch Affiliates get transcoding?
Only on the same best-effort basis as everyone who is not a Partner. Twitch's Transcoding Options FAQ groups “Affiliates and all other streamers” together under resource availability, so becoming an Affiliate does not change your transcode position. Note that 2K streaming is a genuine exception: it requires Enhanced Broadcasting and is limited to Affiliates and Partners.
I had quality options before and now they are gone. Was I penalised?
No. Availability is decided afresh at each go-live against spare server capacity, so losing options between one stream and the next is the normal behaviour of the system rather than a signal about your channel. Twitch is explicit that it “does not remove transcoding options as an enforcement action or otherwise”.
Does Enhanced Broadcasting guarantee 1080p, 720p and 480p?
It guarantees quality options, not those specific ones. Twitch's automatic stream configuration picks your ladder from your GPU, drivers, OS, settings and network speed, and the documented ranges allow between 5 and 2 renditions, a top track anywhere from 1080p60 down to 480p, and total bandwidth from 10.5 Mbps down to 1.5 Mbps. Twitch also says the configuration “may change every time you start streaming”.
Will lowering my bitrate bring the quality options back?
Not as a documented mechanism. Bitrate is not part of the allocation rule Twitch publishes, which turns on server capacity alone. There is a separate, widely repeated community claim — including from an OBS Project forum administrator — that streaming far above Twitch's limits causes the source rendition to be dropped. Twitch's Broadcasting Guidelines publish 6000 kbps as the recommended 1080p60 setting but no hard cut-off, so we cannot confirm it. If you are well above the recommendation, one test stream at 6000 kbps settles it for your setup.
