Why can't I chat on Twitch? Find the cause from the message you see

If it happens in one channel, that channel's settings or a ban are the likely cause. If it happens in every channel, look at your account, your connection or Twitch itself

Twitch's help page lists the common reasons. It does not print the messages chat sends back, the limits a channel can set, or the cases where your message posts and nobody else sees it. This guide puts all of that in one place, with the gaps marked.

In one minute: You usually cannot chat on Twitch because of a setting in that one channel or an action taken against your account. In a single channel, the common causes are a verification requirement, followers-only or subscribers-only mode, slow mode, or a ban or timeout.[1][6] In every channel, it is a chatting suspension, a very new account or your connection, and Twitch says "An unstable or weak internet connection is the most common reason for chat problems."[1] If your message seems to send but nobody responds, AutoMod may be holding it, or the channel may have restricted you so only the streamer and moderators see it.[9][10]

  • 1 channelonly? Twitch says the cause is likely that channel's own settings or restrictions.
  • 6 monthsis the oldest account age a channel can demand from chatters without a verified email or phone.
  • 2 weeksis the longest timeout Twitch's API allows. A plain /timeout lasts 10 minutes.
  • 2, 4 or 6seconds is how long a channel can delay every message from non-moderators.

# One channel or every channel? Start here

Twitch's troubleshooting page asks three things before anything else: whether the problem happens in more than one channel, whether your connection is stable, and whether you see any error messages or prompts in chat.[1] The first question sorts most cases. A channel can only restrict its own chat. Your account status and your connection affect every channel at once.

# What each chat message means, and the fix

When chat refuses a message, Twitch's chat server sends a notice back. Twitch's developer reference prints the whole list: "The following table lists the symbolic constants that the msg-id tag may be set to when the Twitch IRC server sends you a NOTICE message".[3] That list is written for developers, so the Twitch website or app may word a message a little differently. Words in angle brackets stand for the channel name, a time or a number.

Sources for the table: every message is quoted from Twitch's IRC reference.[3] The fixes come from Twitch's help pages: following and verification from the chat troubleshooting page,[1] the Unban Request route from the ban page,[4] and AutoMod from Twitch's AutoMod guide, which says users whose messages are held "will receive a notification that their message is being held for review, as well as a notification if the message was approved or denied."[9] On subscribers-only mode, Twitch's command guide adds that in a channel without subscriptions it "will only allow the Broadcaster and the channel moderators to talk in the chat room."[6]

# Verification: email, phone, account age and follow time

Verification is the first channel requirement Twitch names: "Many channels require chatters to verify their email address or phone number before sending messages."[1] The streamer sets email and phone separately, and for each one chooses all chatters, some chatters, or off.[2]

The "Some chatters" options are where people get stuck. A channel can require verification only from people who have never chatted there before. It can also let unverified accounts chat once the account is old enough, or once they have followed long enough. Twitch gives the ranges: account age "from a range of 1 hour to 6 months", follow time "from a range of 10 Minutes to 3 months."[2] And a viewer who fails the rule "will be prompted to verify their account and will then additionally be subject to any time based requirements (if set) before being allowed to send a chat message."[2] So verifying does not always mean you can type at once.

Sources for the table: Chat Verification Settings for the first five rows,[2] and Twitch's harassment guide for chat rules, which appear as a pop-up and require first-time viewers "to click Agree before they can type in the chat".[8] A streamer can exempt subscribers, VIPs and moderators from the verification rules, so a channel that lets some people chat freely may still stop you.[2]

# Banned, timed out or warned in one channel

A ban on Twitch belongs to one channel. Twitch's ban page says that when you are banned "You cannot send messages in that channel's chat", that you can still watch unless the owner added restrictions, and that "The ban only applies to that specific channel".[4] A timeout is the temporary version of the same thing.[4]

Timeouts. A moderator's /timeout bans you from the chat room "for 10 minutes by default", and the moderator can set another length in seconds.[6] Twitch's API gives the limits: "The minimum timeout is 1 second and the maximum is 1,209,600 seconds (2 weeks)."[7] The chat notice tells you how many seconds are left.[3]

Permanent bans and Unban Requests. If the channel has turned on Unban Requests, "you can submit a one-time request to be unbanned."[4] You do it from the chat column of that channel by clicking Request Unban, and Twitch warns: "Note that once you have sent your unban request, you cannot edit it." A channel can also make you wait first: "Channel owners can also set a cooldown period which newly banned users must adhere to before they can request to be unbanned."[5] There is no route above the channel: "Twitch does not get involved in channel-specific bans."[4]

Warnings. A moderator can send a warning instead of a timeout. Twitch: "Chatters who receive a warning will need to acknowledge the warning before they will be able to chat again."[8] If chat stopped working right after a moderator message, look for a warning to acknowledge.

  1. Read the notice in chat. It says whether you are timed out, and for how long, or banned.[3]
  2. Timed out: wait. The timeout ends on its own.[4]
  3. Warned: acknowledge it. Then you can chat again.[8]
  4. Banned: look for Request Unban in the chat column. If it is there, write one careful message, because you get one and cannot edit it.[5]
  5. No Request Unban option: the channel has not enabled it, or has set a cooldown you have to wait out. Either way, the decision stays with the streamer and their moderators.[4]

# Your message sends but nobody sees it

This is the case Twitch's troubleshooting page covers least, and it is the one people describe as others not seeing their chat. Twitch's pages describe four ways it happens.

  1. The channel restricted you as a suspected ban evader. Twitch's Ban Evasion Detection flags accounts as possible or likely evaders of a ban in that channel, and "By default, messages sent by Likely Ban Evaders will automatically be restricted." Restricted messages "will be displayed only to the streamer and their moderators, both in chat and in the Mod View widget."[10] Moderators can also restrict an account by hand with the /restrict command.[6]
  2. AutoMod is holding the message. A held message waits for a moderator to allow or deny it, and you get a notice that it is being held.[9] Messages containing a channel's blocked terms are held too, and Twitch says blocked terms work "even if AutoMod is turned off."[9]
  3. The streamer blocked you, or you blocked them. Twitch: "If someone has blocked you, you won't see their messages and they won't see yours."[1] Its ban page adds that "The blocked user is not notified that you've blocked them".[4]
  4. The channel delays chat. A streamer can turn on a non-moderator chat delay that "prevents all chat messages from appearing for 2, 4, or 6 seconds." If a moderator times out or bans in that window, the message is removed before other viewers see it.[8]

Twitch's advice if you think the ban-evasion flag is a mistake is patience: "If you are held, your best bet is just to behave well, as moderators can always override Twitch’s detection if they don’t find you suspicious."[10] It also says the detection works channel by channel, so being flagged in more than one channel by mistake is very unlikely.[10]

# You cannot chat in any channel

A chatting suspension. Twitch issues one "when a violation occurs in chat, Whispers, or other forms of writing on Twitch." It blocks chatting in other channels, Whispers, Cheering, redeeming Channel Points and more, and "Chatting suspensions are temporary and will last between 24 hours to 30 days."[5] You can see your enforcements and appeal at appeals.twitch.tv.[1]

A very new account. Twitch: "Very new accounts may experience temporary limitations as part of our efforts to prevent abuse." Its advice is to keep using the account normally. It also says that in rare cases "your account's chat connection may be temporarily restricted due to automated safety measures."[1] None of the Twitch pages read for this guide gives a length for either limit.

Your connection, browser or app. Twitch's fixes are to check your connection, refresh the page or restart the Twitch app, and switch to a more stable network.[1] Blerp's guide adds disabling browser extensions, trying an incognito window and switching browsers.[15] If chat works in one browser and not another, compare against the browsers Twitch supports.

Twitch itself. Twitch's status page lists Chat as its own system, next to Login, Web, Video and Purchases. On 6 October 2026 it showed all systems operational.[13] If Chat is marked as having problems there, nothing on your side will fix it.

# GIFs, Shared Chat and Shield Mode

GIFs. Twitch: "To send GIFs in chat, you must be a Tier 2 or Tier 3 paid subscriber in a channel with GIF keyboard enabled." There is "a 30-second cooldown before a user can send another GIF", and GIFs are blocked in Emote-Only Mode and Shield Mode.[12] So text can work while GIFs fail.

Shared Chat. When streamers join their chats in a Stream Together session, "Each channel has control over their own chat mode settings." A moderator from another channel can ban you for the session: "Viewers who are banned by mods from other channels during a Shared Chat will no longer be able to chat for the duration of the Shared Chat, but can still watch the stream and participate in channel events (such as Polls)." When the session ends, "users will only remain banned in the channel from which the moderation action came from."[11]

Shield Mode. Streamers switch it on during sudden abuse. Its settings include followers-only or sub-only chat, phone or email verification and AutoMod levels, plus "a new mode exclusive to Shield Mode: No First-Time Chatters".[8] If you have never chatted in a channel and it has Shield Mode on with that option, you may not be able to chat until it is turned off.

# Where a popular guide disagrees with Twitch

Google's first page for why can't i chat on twitch, checked on 6 October 2026, has Twitch's own help page first, followed by Reddit, Blerp, a Facebook group post and forum threads. Blerp's is the only full article on that page from a company other than Twitch. It is short and mostly right, with three gaps.

Blerp's guide next to Twitch's pagesSources: Blerp (Mar 6, 2026), Twitch Help and the Twitch API Reference. All read 6 October 2026
QuestionBlerp saysTwitch says
How long is a timeout?A few seconds to several minutes10 minutes by default, up to 2 weeks
How long is slow mode?10 to 60 seconds between messages3 to 120 seconds, 30 by default
Can a ban be undone?Only the streamer or mods can remove itYes, and you can send one Unban Request where enabled
What else stops chat? Not coveredChatting suspensions, blocks, AutoMod holds, restriction

The quotes behind the rows. Blerp: "Timeouts can last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes.", "You might need to wait 10–60 seconds between messages before sending another one." and "Only moderators or the streamer can remove a ban."[15] Twitch: a timeout lasts "for 10 minutes by default",[6] "the maximum is 1,209,600 seconds (2 weeks)", slow mode takes "3 (3 second delay) through 120 (2 minute delay)",[7] and a banned viewer "can submit a one-time request to be unbanned" where the channel allows it.[4] Blerp's third line is not wrong, since the decision stays with the channel. It leaves out the one thing a banned viewer can do.

# If viewers cannot chat in your channel

If viewers tell you they cannot type, the cause is usually a setting you or a moderator turned on. Check in this order.

  • Chat verification. It sits in your Creator Dashboard under Moderation, then Settings. Twitch's Set All to Twitch minimum recommendation button gives a moderate safety rating.[2]
  • Chat modes. Check followers-only, subscribers-only, emote-only, slow mode and unique chat. On a channel without subscriptions, subscribers-only leaves only you and your moderators able to talk.[6]
  • AutoMod. If you never set it, Twitch switches it on with your first chat message, "at Level 1 if you have at least one mod assigned in your channel, and at Level 2 if you have no mods assigned in your channel."[9] Held messages wait in the AutoMod queue in Mod View.
  • Ban Evasion Detection. It is on by default for all channels, and you can change or turn it off in your moderation settings.[10]
  • Shield Mode and Shared Chat. Shield Mode can block first-time chatters,[8] and in Shared Chat each channel's modes apply to its own viewers.[11]

How each chat mode works from the streamer's side is in Twitch chat basics, and the commands that switch them on and off are in the Twitch chat commands list. For raids and spam, the guide to managing harassment in Twitch chat covers the full set of tools.

# The bottom line

Start with scope. If one channel refuses you, read the line chat shows: it names the mode, the verification rule, the timeout or the ban, and Section 2 gives the fix for each.[3] If every channel refuses you, check your connection, the Appeals Portal for a chatting suspension, and Twitch's status page.[1][13] If your messages post but nobody answers, assume AutoMod or a restriction before assuming people are ignoring you.[9][10]

# FAQ

Why can't I chat on Twitch?

In one channel, it is usually that channel's settings: verification, followers-only or subscribers-only mode, slow mode, or a ban or timeout. In every channel, it is usually a chatting suspension, a very new account or your connection.

Why can't I type in chat on Twitch?

Read the message chat shows. It names the mode or rule that stopped you, such as followers-only, subscribers-only, slow mode or a verification requirement. Some channels also make first-time viewers click Agree on their chat rules first.

Why can't others see my chat on Twitch?

Your message may be held by AutoMod, or the channel may have restricted your account, which shows your messages only to the streamer and moderators. A block between you and the streamer also hides messages in both directions.

Why can't I chat on Twitch mobile?

None of the Twitch pages read for this guide describes a rule that applies only on mobile, so check the same channel settings first. For connection problems, Twitch's advice includes restarting the Twitch app.

Why does Twitch make me verify my phone or email to chat?

Because the channel requires it. Streamers can ask all chatters, first-time chatters, or unverified accounts below a set age or follow time to verify. Verify in your Security settings and try again.

Why can I chat in some channels but not others?

Each channel sets its own rules. Twitch says that if the issue only happens in one channel, it is likely that channel's settings or restrictions.

Is Twitch chat down?

Check Twitch's status page, which lists Chat as its own system. If it shows a problem there, wait. If it shows Chat as operational, the cause is more likely on your side or in the channel.

How do I know if I've been banned from a Twitch channel?

Chat tells you. A ban shows a message that you are permanently banned from talking in that channel, and a timeout shows how many seconds are left.

How long does a Twitch timeout last?

A plain /timeout lasts 10 minutes. Moderators can set another length, and Twitch's API allows anything from 1 second to 2 weeks.

How do I get unbanned from a Twitch chat?

If the channel has Unban Requests on, click Request Unban in its chat column and send one message. You cannot edit it after sending, and Twitch does not get involved in channel bans.

Can I chat in my own channel during a chatting suspension?

Twitch's enforcement page says yes, you can still chat on your own channel. Its troubleshooting page says a suspended account cannot chat in any channel, so the two pages disagree.

Why can't I send GIFs in Twitch chat?

You need a Tier 2 or Tier 3 sub in that channel, and the streamer must have GIFs on. GIFs also stop in Emote-Only Mode and Shield Mode, and there is a 30-second cooldown.

Why does Twitch say my message is being checked by mods?

AutoMod is holding it for a moderator to allow or deny. You get another notice when they decide.
