# One channel or every channel? Start here
Open a second, busy channel and try to type there. The answer splits the problem in two. Kick's troubleshooting article uses the same split: "If chat is not working anywhere on KICK, not just on one stream, check the KICK System Status page to see if there is a known issue."[2]
| What you see | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| No chat box, or a prompt to log in | You are not logged in | Section 5 |
| Chat box in one channel will not send | A chat mode in that channel | Section 2 |
| A rules panel above the chat box | Chat Rules not accepted yet | Section 3 |
| You're banned from chat. | A ban in that channel | Section 4 |
| Your old messages dimmed and struck through | A ban or timeout | Section 4 |
| Chat frozen or not loading anywhere | Kick outage, browser or network | Section 5 |
| Message sends, nobody reacts | Fast chat, a mute or a block | Section 6 |
Sources for the table: Kick's viewer guide lists logging in as the first step to chat and names the five common blocks.[1] The ban message and the Request Unban button come from Kick's unban article.[6] The dimmed messages come from the Moderation features guide: "When Chatters are banned from a chat room, they cannot send messages, and their past messages are dimmed and struck through until they are unbanned."[3]
# Chat modes: what each one needs from you
Chat modes are switches the streamer or a moderator turns on to control who can type and how often. Kick lists five of them for moderators: "slow mode, follower-only, sub-only, emote-only, account age restriction".[4] Kick's viewer guide mentions only three. The table covers all five from the viewer's side.
| Mode | Who can type | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Slow mode | Everyone, one message per wait period | Wait the set time between messages |
| Followers-only | Followers, sometimes only after a wait | Follow, then wait out any follow time |
| Subscribers-only | Subscribers only | Subscribe, or wait for the mode to end |
| Emote-only | Everyone, but emotes only | Send emotes with no text or emoji |
| Account age | Accounts older than a set age | Wait until your account is old enough |
- Slow mode. "With slow mode active, Chatters can only send one message within the time period set during activation."[3] The streamer sets the gap in seconds with /slow on followed by a number.[5]
- Followers-only. Following may not be enough on its own. Kick describes the mode as one that "Restricts chat to accounts that have followed your channel for a specified time."[4] The Moderation features guide says that when this mode is switched on, "you can choose a cooldown period that new followers must wait before they can send messages."[3] Neither page says whether Kick shows you how long the wait is.
- Subscribers-only. Only subscribers can chat. The option exists only on channels with subscriptions: "the menu option only appears when the channel has subscriptions enabled."[3] The steps to subscribe are in the guide to subs and gift subs on Kick.
- Emote-only. "Messages containing any kind of text will be blocked." This includes ordinary emoji from your keyboard, which Kick says "are also considered text and are therefore blocked."[3] Use emotes from the emote button instead.
- Account age restriction. It "Sets a minimum account age that Chatters must meet before they can send messages."[4] Kick recommends it against new accounts made for spam, so a brand-new account is the one most likely to hit it. Kick's pages do not say what ages streamers can choose.
# Chat Rules, blocked words and links
Three more channel settings can stop or change your message. None of them is in Kick's viewer troubleshooting list.[1][2]
- Chat Rules you have not accepted. Streamers can add rules that show in a panel above the message box, and "Chatters can only send messages after they click Accept."[3] If you see a rules panel, read it and click Accept.
- Blocked words. Streamers and moderators can block words "by setting them to be automatically redacted in messages."[3] So a message with a blocked word may still appear, but with the word hidden. Rephrase it.
- Links. "Channel Owners can block all messages containing URLs."[3] If only your messages with links fail, remove the link.
# Timed out or banned in one channel
Kick has two kinds of chat ban. A timeout is temporary and lasts as long as the moderator set it for. A ban is permanent until someone with the right permissions removes it.[3] Either way, you cannot send messages in that channel's chat room, and your earlier messages there are dimmed and struck through.[3] Kick calls these channel-level bans and says they are managed by the streamer.[7]
If you were timed out, wait it out. Kick's pages do not agree on whether the number a moderator types after /timeout is in seconds or minutes, so the length is hard to guess from the command alone. Our moderator guide sets out that disagreement. The Moderation features guide puts the maximum at 10,080 minutes, which is 7 days.[3]
If you were banned, you can ask the channel to lift it. Kick's unban article gives the steps:[6]
- Go to the channel where you are banned. The chat box shows "You're banned from chat."[6]
- Click Request Unban.[6]
- Write a short message explaining why the ban should be lifted, and submit it.[6]
- Wait for the streamer or a moderator to decide. "If it's approved, your chat ban is removed and you can chat again right away. If it's rejected, you'll need to wait 30 days before submitting another request."[6]
You can have only one request open per channel: "You can only have one Unban Request open per channel at a time." The request goes to that channel's streamer and moderators, and Kick adds that "there's no need to contact KICK Support separately."[6]
# You cannot chat in any channel
If chat fails everywhere, the cause is not one channel's settings. Work through these in order.
- Check that you are logged in. "You can browse KICK and watch most public streams without an account." Sending messages in chat is on Kick's list of things that need one.[9]
- Check that your email is verified. Kick sends a verification link when you sign up, and warns: "You may not be able to use all KICK features until your email is verified."[9] Kick's page does not say whether chat is one of those features, but a missing verification is quick to rule out.
- Check Kick's status page. Kick runs a System Status page and says "When an issue appears here, it also means our team is aware of it and is working to resolve it as quickly as possible."[11] If there is an incident, wait.
- Refresh, log out and in, switch browser or switch to the app. If chat works in one and not the other, the problem is that browser or that app.[2]
- Turn off extensions. Kick advises disabling "browser extensions, especially ad blockers and privacy tools" when chat fails on the web.[2] Its browser page explains why privacy tools matter: "at times KICK can’t verify that your request came from a real person."[8] It names Brave, Opera, Edge and uBlock Origin in Firefox as known issues. Our guide to Kick's honeypot error covers that check in detail.
- Update the browser. Kick lists "Chat not connecting or appearing frozen" among the problems an outdated browser can cause.[8]
- Check your connection. "A larger delay, where messages take 30 seconds or more to appear, usually means a network issue." Frequent reconnecting messages mean an unstable network, which Kick says is more common on Wi-Fi.[2]
# Your message sends but nobody answers
Sometimes chat works and it just feels like it does not. Three things Kick documents explain most of these cases.
- The chat is too fast. On large streams, Kick says, chat can run at "hundreds of messages per minute. This is normal and not a bug."[2] Even a mention may be missed: Kick says the streamer "may not see it if chat is busy".[1]
- Someone muted you. Muting is personal. It hides your messages from the person who muted you, not from the chat. Kick: "They will not be told they have been muted."[7] So you cannot tell from your side.
- A moderator deleted the message. Other viewers see "Deleted by a moderator" in place of the text, Kick's Moderation features guide says. It also says "Deleted messages cannot be recovered."[3]
# Where Kick's own pages leave gaps
Google's first page for why can't i chat on kick, checked on 10 October 2026, is mostly Kick's own pages: two Help Center articles, the Help Center's Troubleshooting collection and Kick Support on X, plus a Reddit thread, a YouTube video and a GitHub issue. No independent written guide is on it. That puts weight on Kick's own pages, and they do not quite agree with each other.
| Question | Viewer guide says | Other Kick pages say |
|---|---|---|
| Why can I not send messages? | Five causes | Also emote-only, account age, follow wait, Chat Rules |
| I think my ban was a mistake | Contact the streamer or mods directly | Click Request Unban in the chat box |
| Does following unlock followers-only chat? | Yes, follow first | Streamers can add a wait for new followers |
The quotes behind the rows. Kick's viewer guide (May 7, 2026) lists five reasons and, for bans, says "you can reach out to the Streamer or one of their Moderators directly."[1] The blocking and reporting page (May 7, 2026) says the same: "the best path is to reach out to that Streamer or their Mod team directly."[7] The unban article (August 11, 2026) adds the Request Unban button.[6] Both the viewer guide and the chat-not-loading article say of followers-only mode: "You need to follow the channel before you can chat".[1][2] The Moderation features guide (May 22, 2026) adds the cooldown for new followers.[3] Separately, Kick's browser page (September 7, 2026) recommends Microsoft Edge and also lists Edge among known issues.[8]
# For streamers: when viewers cannot chat in your channel
If viewers tell you they cannot chat, start with the settings you or your moderators control. For lifting restrictions quickly, Kick's command reference lists "/slow off, /followonly off, /subonly off, /emoteonly off".[5] Then check three things that do not have an off command in that list:
- Account age restriction. It is set in Channel Actions on your dashboard.[4]
- Follow time. A long follow-time requirement in followers-only mode locks out new followers, including viewers who follow you for the first time after a raid.[4][3] If you raise it during a harassment wave, lower it again afterwards. The raid side is covered in how to raid on Kick.
- Chat Rules and link blocking. Rules make every chatter click Accept before typing. Link blocking stops any message with a URL. Both are in Chat Settings in the KICK Dashboard.[3]
If you banned someone by mistake, /unban with their username removes a ban or a timeout.[5] Unban requests from viewers come to you and your moderators.[6]
Open chat helps. So does being found
Streamrise delivers Kick viewers at the speed and over the window you set in the dashboard, from 30 minutes to a month, starting at $0.49 per 100. It needs your channel link only, not your Kick password. Kick's Community Guidelines prohibit bots, engagement manipulation or third-party tools that artificially inflate views, followers or interactions. Read them and decide for yourself.
- 30 min to a month, you set the window
- Your channel link only, no password
- Per-order delivery log
# The bottom line
If you can't chat in one Kick channel, look for the channel's settings first: a chat mode, Chat Rules to accept, a follow wait, an account age limit, or a ban you can appeal with Request Unban.[1][3][6] If you can't chat in any channel, check Kick's status page, then your login, browser extensions and network.[2][11] And if your message sends but nobody answers, it may be the speed of chat or a mute you cannot see, not a broken chat.[7]
# FAQ
Why can't I chat on Kick?
Usually because the channel has a chat mode on, such as followers-only or subscribers-only, or because you are timed out, banned or not logged in. If chat fails in every channel, check Kick's status page, your browser extensions and your network.
Why can't I type in Kick chat?
Look above the chat box first. A Chat Rules panel means you must click Accept before you can send. If there is no panel, a chat mode or a ban in that channel is the next thing to check.
I followed the channel. Why can I still not chat?
Streamers can set a cooldown that new followers must wait in followers-only mode. The channel may also have an account age limit or subscribers-only mode on.
Why do my emoji not send in Kick chat?
The channel is probably in emote-only mode. Kick treats keyboard emoji as text, so they are blocked. Use emotes from the emote button.
How do I know if I am banned on Kick?
The chat box shows "You're banned from chat." and your earlier messages in that chat are dimmed and struck through. A timeout looks similar but ends on its own.
How do I get unbanned from a Kick chat?
Click Request Unban in the chat box and explain why. The streamer and moderators decide. You can have one request open per channel, and after a rejection you wait 30 days to try again.
Why is Kick chat not working on any channel?
Check Kick's System Status page. If Kick is fine, refresh, log out and in, try another browser or the app, turn off ad blockers and privacy extensions, and check your connection.
Why is Kick chat not working on my phone?
Force-quit and reopen the app, update it, and restart the phone. Reinstall as a last step, after checking you know your password. If chat works on the web but not in the app, the problem is the app.
Do you need an account to chat on Kick?
Yes. You can watch most public streams without one, but sending messages needs a logged-in Kick account.
Why can moderators chat when I cannot?
Kick says moderators are not affected by chat modes and can chat whatever restrictions are active.
